I Needed Closure — but was it worth the risk?
I knew I’d see him today. Don’t ask me why or how, after all it had been years. But somehow, I knew.
It could have been any other Thursday when I entered my local shopping centre to get the three types of milk necessary to satisfy the needs of the four of us who lived in my happy home. I felt him. I knew he was here, even though he had moved interstate years ago.
I just knew.
I found all the milks and decided to surprise my family with homemade tacos. I even went back to the fruit and vegetable section to get the tiny fresh chilies for my husband.
All the while there was a nagging feeling of doom. I made the usual polite conversation with the cashier and then the voice I could never forget said, “Babe”.
I slowly turned. Surprised, and yet not surprised. After all, I had become used to trusting my instincts.
“Hi”, I replied as naturally as if he was a parent from the school. While I searched my bag for wallet and credit card, I took subtle glances, deciding the last fifteen years had served him well. He had the salt and pepper going on in his hair, the back and sides longer than I remembered. The tan was natural and probably the result of months playing sport…
